AN ANALYSIS OF SIMILE FOUND IN SIX SHORT STORIES BY SARAH ORNE JEWETT
Abstract
The purpose of this research is to describe the forms of simile in these short stories and themeaning in the context of simile in the short stories by Sarah Orne Jewett. Data were
collected in thesix short stories by Sarah Orne Jewett which are entitled A White Heron
(1886), Lady Ferry (1879), Martha’s Lady (1897), An Autumn Holiday (1880), The Hilton’s
Holiday (1893), The Night Before Thanksgiving (1910).Data were analyzed by using the
theory of Madden (2007: 76).The comparison is indirect and marked by words like or as. For
the analyzing the data, the writer uses identity method(Sudaryanto, 1993). Basedon the
analysis the data take from six short stories, the writer found that (21) forms of simile with
connective wordlike,and (4) forms with connectiveword as.
