Abstract

The research discussed about tanka made by Masaoka Shiki. There are fourteen tanka that tells about the condition of Masaoka Shiki when sick and the beauty of nature. Nature is associated with plants. The reason election tanka related plants because plants can really be enjoyed by touching it.
The research aims to uncover the essence of poetry in fourteen of tanka by Masaoka Shiki. To analysis tanka, writer using the theory essence of poetry presented by Herman J. Waluyo in the book Teori dan Apresiasi Puisi. Elements of essence of poetry consist of theme, feeling, tone and mood, and intention. Meaning found after analyse the theme, feeling, tone and mood, and intention. In this research the writer using descriptive method.
The results showed that all of the tanka is humanitarian themes that related to Masaoka Shiki’s hope and grief experienced. In accordance with the theme of hope and grief, can be included that the Masaoka Shiki’s condition was rise and down. Be it physical conditions or moods. That condition was expressed with meaning philosophy of plants. To express the hope, Shiki describes flowers peony, susuki, ume, hagi, hasu, and sachi grass that have meaning, strength, spirit and life. As for grief, Shiki describe tree cerry blossom that fragile, kaname, and ume that fall because the plants mean weakness and death.
