MEKANISME PERTAHANAN DIRI TOKOH WAGAHAI DALAM NOVEL WAGAHAI WA NEKO DE ARU

Abstract

Research with the material object of the novel Wagahai wa Neko de Aru centered on a cat character who calls himself Wagahai (I) who lives in Shosei's house. Wagahai observes human behavior and the surrounding environment and uses self-defense mechanisms because of the anxieties that happened to him. The intrinsic approach is used to reveal character's of Wagahai through dramatic techniques. The extrinsic approach uses psychoanalytic theory, especially personality development to analyze anxiety types and self-defense mechanisms. The results of the research reveal that Wagahai’s self-defense mechanisms were intertwined with his characters and his anxieties. Wagahai carries out eight of the ten self-defense mechanisms consisting of denial, repression, projection, rationalization, displacement, reaction formation, sublimation, and intellectualization. The Wagahai character's self-defense mechanism is dominated by rationalization (five data) and reaction formation (five data) which function to replace conflicting feelings, behavior and find reasons for justification. Wagahai's self-defense mechanism was successful in overcoming the anxiety disorder he was experiencing. However, one of self-defense mechanism, displacement by drinking beer, made Wagahai very drunk and had an accident that ended his life.
