Abstract

This research examines positive politeness strategies in video YouTube comments on BBC news of Kate’s cancer announcement. This research aims to find the positive politeness strategies related according to Brown and Levinson in video YouTube comments. This research deals with a pragmatic approach. The method used is qualitative. The writers found 52 data analyze and the writer describes the data according to the point of positive politeness strategies, namely (1) Notice, (2) Exaggerate, (3) Use in-group identity markers, (4) Seek agreement, (5) Show the knowledge and concern, and (6) Giving and asking for a reason. In addition, the writers found three functions of positive politeness strategies, namely (1) Expressive function, (2) Referential function, and (3) Phatic function. Then, the writer found positive politeness strategies in the form of notice and phatic function that are mostly found in the comment.
