Abstract

Yuri!!! on Ice falls under the shounen-ai genre and is set the background of ice skating figure. Katsuki Yuri, the character in the anime, reveals a homosexual identity after being influenced by his coach from Russia. This study aims to identify the homosexual identity and its signs of Katsuki Yuri. The theory used is Cass's homosexual identity formation which is linked with signs based on Peirce's semiotics theory. The observe critically on anime and note-taking technique was used to collect data on homosexual identity. The analysis of the character's homosexual identity and signs was conducted using a descriptive method. The study's results reveal that Katsuki Yuri's homosexual identity goes through four of the six phases of homosexual identity. No data were found for the Identity Pride and Identity Tolerance phases. Each phase of Katsuki Yuri's homosexual identity is associated with signs predominantly indexed, indicating a cause-and-effect relationship; symbol, indicating a universal agreement for the use of words and objects; and icon, indicating the use of objects according to their original form. The most common index, each totaling 13, were found in the Identity Acceptance and Identity Comparison phases.
