THE MAIN CHARACTER’S DEPRESSION AS SEEN IN CHUCK PALAINHUK’S FIGHT CLUB

Abstract

In this thesis the writer studies the narrator as the main character in the novel “Fight Club”.
The study is on the main character’s depression. The discussion is focused on symptoms and
the causes of the main character’s depression. The purposes of this analysis are (1) to know
and to describe the main character’s depression, (2) to find and describe the symptoms of the
main character showed in the novel. To analyses this novel, the writer uses the theory from
some expert in American Psychiatric association. This theory concerns about depression. The
result of the study is the main character as the narrator in the story who experiences
depression characterized by sadness and despair, and also his depression followed by several
symptoms like loss of interest, insomnia, feelings of worthlessness and having suicidal
ideation.
