AN ANALYSIS OF ANGER EXPRESSION IN THE MOVIE “NANNY McPhee”

Abstract

This research aims to describe the words used to express emotion such as anger. Data of the study were taken from a number of NANNY McPhee scripts movie. Emotional expression refers to feelings and its special thought, some biological condition and psychological condition, also the motivation to act (Goleman 1997). There are classification of emotional expressions: sadness, anger, love, joy and fear. but in this study the writer only focused on anger expression. Angry is the response or reaction from the resistant or frustation of what wants to do or say (Morgan 1956). After collecting the data, the writer analyzed the data by using qualitative method. In this research, the writer used pragmatics theory in linguistic field. The theories used in the analysis are anger expression such as irritation, annoyed, exasperation, disgust, and verbal communication, repetition, rude words, and contex (Fiehler, 2002, Parrot, 2001, Crabtree, 1991). The results show the various words used to express anger and types of anger expression namely aggressive anger and passive anger. In conclution, the writer found some strategies used in the expression of anger, this anger were influenced by contexts that make the characters in the movie used the language in terms of figurative language especially metaphor and simile, and the use of repetition of certain words to emphasize the feeling, and also the use of rude words.
