AN ANALYSIS OF FEAR EXPRESSIONS AS FOUND IN THE MOVIE, “THE CONJURING”

Abstract

Fear is a kind of emotion that almost appear in every aspect of human expression. Movie is one
of the media that express fear expression. The purpose of the study are to identify fear expression
that appear on different context, expression and words. Fear expression can be expressed
verbally, and non-verbally. The data were taken from the scripts of “the conjuring” movie. The
theories used in the analysis were basic emotion (Fiehler 2002, Parrot, 2001), speech acts theory
Yule (1996), emotional expression by Ekman (1999) and verbal communication by Lucas
(2009). The writer usedqualitative descriptive method. From the data analysis, the writer found
there are three classifications of emotion: fear, fright and worry. To determine the fear
expression in the movie the writer use linguistic and physical context to reveal all the fear
expression on the movie. To express fear expression on the movie it can be expressed by verbal
(word) and non verbal (mimic, intonation, and facial expression).
