BRITISH HEGEMONY TOWARD IBO SOCIETY AS REFLECTED IN CHINUA ACHEBE’S THINGS FALL APART: A POST-COLONIAL STUDIES
Abstract
The research discussed British Hegemony towards Ibo Society reflected in Chinua Achebe’s
Things Fall Apart. The British cultures hegemonize Ibo society. The aim was to describe the
British hegemony and how the Ibo society responded the hegemony. To attain the aim, the
research was held by applying post-colonialism theory with historical approach. The research
used descriptive methods with close reading technique. The research that resulted in the
hegemony of the British existed in the Ibo life in belief, education, politic, and economy
aspects. The Christian, the British school, the British government, and the British trade
dominated Ibo life and changed the Ibo culture. Dualism appears as the response of Ibo
society toward British hegemony. Dualism consists of the acceptance and resistance of Ibo
society toward British hegemony.
