Abstract

The writer is interested to analyze the main character’s (Okei) psychology since it is
related with the characterization of the main character which appear from the beginning until
the end of the novel (Okei). The writer analyzes the main character’s psychology by using
Maslow’s hierarchy of needs. In analyzing the main character’s psychology, the writer
applies the method of characterization of fiction both direct method (telling) and indirect
method (showing). The main character has fulfilled all of her hierarchy of needs. The main
character has achieved her physiological needs such eat and sleep. The safety need is
achieved by her success in escaping from Aizu to Edo. The social need is achieved by joining
the samurai girls group. The esteem needs is achieved through the recognition of her status by
foreigners. The self-actualization need is achieved through her ability in sewing and living in
America.
