Abstract

In this paper, authors analyzed The Fourth Battle of Kawanakajima in the Sengoku
period based on Uesugi Kenshin novel by Yoshikawa Eiji. There are similarities and
differences between novel and history even though the historiographer and Yoshikawa Eiji
used the same source in their writing.
The author used a sociology literature approach by Laurenson and Swingewood theory,
where the research understand the literature as a manifestation capture historical events and
socio-cultural circumstances. The method used in this research is descriptive method.
Manifestations of historical events seen from Sengoku period. Sengoku period depicts
the battle between countries and competitions among the daimyo as happens in the Uesugi
Kenshin novel. Manifestasions of historical events are viewed from both sides of Uesugi
Kenshin and Takeda Shingen, because the novel as the main source in this paper is written
from both sides. We can see the similarities and differences such as number of troops in the
war, the route taken, the number of troops killed, and Woodpecker Operation. Manifestations
of social circumstances can be seen from social structure. Cultural circumstances are taken
from the samurai and firearms which are used in warfare. Samurai way of life about suicide
and death in battle which is written in history to show loyalty to the lord is not the same as the
novel that depicts loyalty should not be shown to suicide and died in battle. In the social
structure, Uesugi Kenshin and Takeda Shingen were two daimyos who ranks third after Tenno
and kuge. Firearms indicates the entry of Europeans to Japan.
