COMMISSIVE ACT ANALYSES IN GEORGE WALKER BUSH PRESIDENTIAL SPEECHES

Abstract

The thesis entitled Commissive Act Analyses in George Walker Bush's Presidential
Speeches. It aims to determine the type of Commissive Act in his presidential speeches.
The author examines for the meaning contained. Qualitative method used to explain the
data. Four steps exercised by the author, who was to determine the sources, collect,
analyze and present the data. The author used Agih method (Sudaryanto: 1993). The
author employs Commissive Act and Speech Act theory by Searle (1977:34), Austin
(1975:151), Hickey (1986:72) and Cognitive theory of Pragmatic by Sperber & Wilson
(1995: 267,270).The author found 35 pieces of promises, 12 threats and 3 offerings. To
analyze the type of commissive acts who had been presented by him, the author analyzed
the intentions & meanings conveyed by him.
