Abstract

Subordinating conjunctions is a conjunction that connects two or more clauses that do not have the same syntactic status. The existence of conjunction in sentence is necessary because it explains the meaning contained in a paragraph. This study aimed to describe the meaning of subordinating conjunctions in the heading of editorial at Padang Express newspaper. The design of this research used Dendi Sugono’s teory. The method used to collect the data was a method refers to the technical note. Then, the data were analyzed by using agih method with permutation technique, substitution and deletion technique. Based on the analysis, it was found that there are six kinds of subordinating conjunctions meaning: 1) subordinating conjunctions of time (when, since, once, before, after); 2) subordinating conjunctions of condition (if); 3) subordinating conjunctions of purpose (so, so that, for, in order); 4) subordinating conjunctions of reason or cause (because, as, as if); 5) subordinating conjunctions of way (with, in); 6) subordinating conjunctions of substitute for a noun (that).
