THE STUDY OF ADDRESS TERMS IN RELATION TO POLITENESS STRATEGIES AS FOUND IN BATTLESHIP

Abstract

The research dealt with Address Terms in Relation to Politeness Strategies. The purpose
was to identify the type of address term, which are used by speakers and the influential
factor in the use of those address terms, and it also included the way of speakers in using
address term based on politeness strategies when they made a conversation with the
hearers. The researcher used sociolinguistics and pragmatics theories in linguistics field
and identity method by Sudaryanto. The result of this research were five forms of address
terms in Battleship; title, first name, last name, nickname, and combinations of two
address terms such as title last name. Four types of politeness strategies were also
founded; positive politeness, negative politeness, bald on-record, and off-record. In the
end of the research it was founded that the use of a certain address terms can affect
politeness strategies and vice versa.
