Abstract

The writer analyzes the hierarchy of needs of the main character, Haruki, in
Chia Danshi (Cheer Boy) a novel by Asai Ryo since there is a relationship with the
characterization of the main character which appear from the beginning until the end
of the novel. The writer analyzes the main character by using Maslow’s hierarchy of
needs and analyzes the main character by applying Stanton’s theory. The results of
the research are as follows. Haruki has achieved his physiological need such as food
and drink. The safety need is achieved by his success in escaping from judo,
supported by his strong determination. The social need is achieved by joining the
cheerleader group for boys, supported by his strong determination. The esteem need
is achieved from the admiration of his group members, this is supported by his
enthusiastic character and the self-esteem is achieved from his confident towards his
own ability, supported by his discipline character. The self-actualization need is
achieved by using his talent in the national tournament, supported by his enthusiastic
and discipline character.
