GRAMMATICAL COHESION AS USED IN THE TEXT OF LIFE STYLE NEWS PICTURES IN TIME MAGAZINE

Abstract

Cohesion is divided into two parts, namely grammatical cohesion and lexical cohesion.
With the presence of cohesion can create the meaning , form, and structure of the
sentence will be seen clearly. This thesis only focused on grammatical cohesion be
employed to display text in news magazine TIME. This study aims at discovering the
types of grammatical cohesion such as reference (reference), replacement (substitution),
(ellipsis) and conjunctions contained in lifestyle news text display based on the concepts
and theories of Halliday and Hassan (1976). From the analysis of the data the writer
found the types of grammatical cohesion such as reference types (personal
demonstrative and comparative reference) substitution (nominal), ellipsis (nominal
verbal, clausal), and the type of conjunction (additive and causal conjunction
Adversative). After examining the data, the writer conclude that it is necessary that
grammatical cohesion within the understanding of a text, because of the presence of
grammatical cohesion can support the integrity of the text so that the text is easier to
understand and be understood.
