THE STUDY OF SATIRE ON POLITICAL CARTOON IN THE JAKARTA POST

Abstract

The research discussed the satire on political cartoons in The Jakarta Post. It was carried out to know satire used on political cartoons and politeness strategies applied by cartoonists. In analyzing this research, the researcher used the theory  politeness strategies by Brown and Levinson. The method applied in analyzing the data is identity method by Sudaryanto. As the result of the study, it was found that the contents of satire in political cartoons were political satires conveyed to politicians. In using the satires, the cartoonists applied bald-on record strategy, positive politeness strategy, and negative politeness and off record strategy.
