AN ANALYSIS OF ENGLISH ABBREVIATION IN SMS USED BY STUDENTS OF BUNG HATTA UNIVERSITY AND PADANG STATE UNIVERSITY

Abstract

The development of technology influences the way communication. The development
of mobile phone as a means of communication anables people to send message in
written form. The purpose of this research is to describe varieties of word formation
and the meaning of word in SMS send by university students in Bung Hatta
University and UNP. This research applies theory proposed by Hartman and Stork
(1973:53), and used method Sudaryanto (1993:132). The research found that majority
of sender use various abbreviation such as by using number, similar sound to replace
word, symbol, function and contraction. Since the dominant type of word formation
is the cutting, the new word meaning the same as the meaning of words before.
