AN ANALYSIS OF POSITIVE POLITENESS A S SEEN IN THE MOVIE DIVERGENT

Abstract

This study aims to describe the positive politeness strategies used by the characters in the movie Divergent. In analyzing the data the writer used some concepts stated by Brown and Levinson (1987). Politeness strategies are ways chosen to convey the utterances as polite as possible. The method used in this study is qualitative method stated by Moleong (2007). The problems to be discussed are the use of positive politeness strategies and the frequent strategies of positive politeness used in the movie. From the data analysis, the writer finds there are ten strategies of positive politeness used, namely (1) notice, (2) exaggerate, (3) use in-group identify makers, (4) avoid disagreement, (5) Joke, (6) offer and promise, (7) be optimistic, (8) include both speaker and hearer in activity, (9) tell or ask for reason, and (10) give gifts to hearer. In addition, the writer also finds the strategies of positive politeness which are mostly frequent used, such as in-group identity makers, include both of speaker and hearer in the activity. All of the findings will be discussed in this paper briefly.
