Abstract

The object of this research is a collection of tanka Ichiaku no Suna (A Hand of Sand) by Ishikawa Tokuboku. The writer interested to a analyze the meaning of love through the idioms in tanka which were using kanji (china characters used in Japanese) ai and koi. From 4 kinds of tanka which used kanji ai, the most appearance of the meaning of love was thinking all the feeling was important. While from 20 kinds of tanka which were using kanji koi, a fire love was the most appearance of the meaning of love, because it appeared in 17 kinds of tanka. The poet had high spirit because of his love. So, all of us can know that ai had a general meaning of love and it can be used for our own family (children, parents, couple), then it can be used for pets, money and works. Ai is a continuation of koi, finding a happiness together, more serious, more emotional, more honest, more generous and become strong. While koi inclined to a feeling that people feel, centered to one heart with hidden motivation in mind, more egoist and possessive. Koi is also for temporary feeling of teenager. Then the writer could know that koi is the beginning of ai, finding itself happiness and look play around with love.
