AN ANALYSIS OF SLANG WORDS IN THE SCARY MOVIE

Abstract

This research aims at identifying and describing the slang words used in the Scary Movie in
terms of types of slang words, meaning, and contexts in use. Slang is informal language created and
used by a particular group of people in a community. The development of slang language is influenced
by dynamic changes of meaning in any periods and the phenomenon of language that occur in the
community. Some theories used in analyzing the data were taken from Holmes, J. (2001), Crabtree
(1993), Coleman (2014). The method used in this study was the qualitative method. From data analysis,
the results show that there are some types of slang used in this movie, such as teenager slang, vulgar
slang, sex slang and hip hop slang. Slang words can be a contribution in the development of language
that probably it will be a new english vocabularies in the future. Hopefully, this research can motivate
other people to do the further research in terms of the varieties of language created by a certain group
or community.
