AN ANALYSIS OF CONVERSATIONAL IMPLICATURE FOUND IN THE MOVIE “THE HUNGER GAMES”
Abstract
This study aims at describing the conversational implicature found in the movie The Hunger
Games. The writer used the qualitative method to analyze the data. The writer applies one
theory of conversational implicature proposed by Grice (1975), Yule (1996). From data
analysis, it can be seen that there are four types of conversational implicature found in the
movies, namely (1). generalized conversational implicature, (2) particularized conversational
implicature, (3) scalar implicature, and (4) conventional implicature. Furthermore,
implicature that appears in the dialogues in terms of emphasis statement, affirmation,
commanding, hope, uncompromising, In addition, there are some forms of speech that were
different from the meaning intended by the character in their utterancee that contained
implicature during conversation in the hunger games movie. Among those implicatures, it
was found that the implicature affirmation and hopefullness found most frequently. Context
that influence most commonly found is epistemic context.
