AN ANALYSIS OF SPEECH ACT OF DIRECTIVE FOUND IN THE MALEFICENT MOVIE

Abstract

The objective of this study to describe the type of speech act of directive in the utterances among the characters in the Maleficent movie script. The researcer used descriptive qualitative method in analyzing trhe data . all of the utterances in this script were analyzed based on the concepts stated by Searle(1979). Morteover, those utterances were also anlyzed using the concepts of commubnication strategy stated by Brown and Levinson (1987). The results show there are a number of speech act of directive used by the characters in the movie such as requesting, suggesting, advising, commanding. From the findings, the most dominant speech act of directive in this movie is speech act of commanding, requesting,suggesting, and finally speech act of advising. From all forms of directive speech act, speech act of commanding has the higest frequency of used among others because of this movie tells the story about someone has the power in a kingdom.
