AN ANALYSIS OF APPROBATION AND MODESTY MAXIM IN SEVERAL DISNEY MOVIES

Abstract

; "> This research deals with the politeness principles based on the concepts proposed by Leech (1977), how the concepts operates in conversational exchamges. The six maxim proposed by Leech are tact, generosity,approbation,modesty,agreement, and sympathy maxims. The writter focus on approbation and modesty maxims. Approbation maxim refers to minimize the expression of belief which express
dispraise to other, maximize the expression of beliefs which approval of other”
and modesty maxim refers to minimize the expression of dissagreement between
self and other, maximize the expression of agreement between self and other”. The data of this research were takenfrom the conversations that consist approbation and modesty maxims in several Disney Movies, cinderella fairy tale,
Beauty and The Beast, and Aladdin. Overall, there are eight conversation containing approbation maxim with the markers a lot of praising and congratulating words and seven conversations containing modesty maxim with the use of the words apology and thanking as expressive forms. These maxims are influenced by social factors stated by Holmes (2013) to whom the characters speak in the movies, whether they come from high and low class.
