Abstract

In every song lyrics, there are always words or phrases being repeated or having opposite or contrastive meanings. Beside to make the lyrics more interesting, songwriters tend to use the described ways to stress the implied meaning which is wanted to be delivered to the listeners. However, there are many listeners who do not realize that those things can be examined scientifically. Actually, the words that are repeated and the words having opposite meaning are constitute a part of lexical cohesion. In accordance with Paltridge (2006), who said ‘the relationship between words with similar, related, and different meanings’ is called Lexical Cohesion. In this paper the writer analyzes about the lexical cohesion found in the song lyrics by the group band Foo Fighters. And the data that are analyzed are taken from the lyrics of Foo Fighters songs. From all song lyrics of Foo Fighters, the writer chooses six song lyrics that are identified having more lexical cohesion than other song lyrics. In this paper, the writer found two types of lexical cohesion, they are reiteration—repetition, synonymy, antonymy, hyponymy, and meronymy and collocation. Meanwhile, from both two types of lexical cohesion, the repetition is the kind of lexical cohesion that is mostly mentioned, while the hyponymy is the kind of lexical cohesion that is not found in anywhere in the data.
