THE SECOND YEAR STUDENTS’ PERCEPTION ON THE IMPORTANCE OF LEARNING ENGLISH AT DEPARTMENT OF PTIK FKIP UBH

Abstrak

INTRODUCTION As a global language, English is becoming more and more important in international cooperation and communication [1]. But English is not easy for some people. They have difficulty in understanding or using this language in communication. Some aspects of English should be learned by the students, for example speaking and pronunciation of words in communication. Speaking is oral communication in using words or the ability to converse or express ideas fluently between speaker and listener [2]. Pronunciation is one of the important aspects to make communication clear [3]. In this case, the researcher focuses on PTIK Department students. The PTIK department is one of the departments that are familiar with English because they always interact with computers and laptops which are programmed in English. Based on this case the researcher researched the PTIK students’ perception of the importance of learning English. METHOD This research is descriptive because it describes the current status of the research subject [4]. The population of this research was PTIK students who registered in 2018. The number of samples was 18 students taken by the total sampling technique. The data was taken by giving a Questionnaire to the students. The researcher counts the percentage of the result of the questionnaire. The researcher wanted to know the students' perception of the importance of learning English and the students’ perception of the importance of learning English language skills. FINDINGS AND DISCUSSION Based on the data analysis, it was found that students of PTIK consider that English is an important subject. Before doing the research, researchers found that some students didn’t like English. but based on their response on the questionnaire by the index 91.5% it is categorized into a good/ positive response. The researcher described the students’ perception of the importance of learning English and the students’ perception of the importance of Learning English language skills. Based on the result of data analysis, the researcher found that the respondents said learning English is an important subject. Based on the data analysis the index is 95.5% and it is categorized into a good/positive response. After analyzing the data. It was found that students of PTIK think that learning English language skills is important. Based on the result of data analysis, it was found the students’ perception about the importance of learning English language skills index for listening was 90.125% and it is categorized into a good /positive response. CONCLUSION AND SUGGESTION Based on the results of the data analysis, it can be concluded that in general, the students of PTIK think that English is an important subject. It can be seen in the high index that is found on the result of data analysis. The students’ perception about the importance of learning English is a good/positive response. The students’ perception about the importance of learning English language skills also has a high index which is categorized into a good/positive response. And the researcher would like to give some suggestions for the lecturers. The researcher suggested that the lecturer always motivate the students to learn English. For the students the researcher suggested the students improve their English because they have better English. For the next researcher,s The next researcher can use the result of this research as a reference to research with the related topic.
