Abstrak

This study aims to improve the reading skills of fourth-grade students at SDN 41 Kapuh, Pesisir Selatan Regency, through the implementation of the Take and Give learning model. The background of this research is based on the low reading skills of students, as indicated by their lack of participation in learning activities, difficulties in understanding text content, and learning outcomes that have not met the competency standards. To address this issue, the study was conducted using the Classroom Action Research (CAR) method, which consisted of two cycles. Each cycle included the stages of planning, implementation, observation, and reflection. The research subjects were 20 fourth-grade students at SDN 41 Kapuh.. The findings indicate that the Take and Give model had a positive impact on students' reading skills. In the first cycle, teacher activity increased from 75.9% to 80.76%, while student activity improved from 62.5% to 75%, yet the student learning mastery rate was still 45%. After refining the strategy in the second cycle, teacher activity rose to 87%, student engagement reached 85%, and the student learning mastery rate increased significantly to 81.5%. These improvements demonstrate that the Take and Give model encourages active student participation and enhances reading comprehension. Based on these findings, it can be concluded that the Take and Give learning model is effective in improving the reading skills of fourth-grade students. This model not only helps students better understand texts but also creates a more interactive and enjoyable learning environment. Therefore, it is recommended as an innovative method for enhancing reading instruction in elementary schools.
