Abstract

The shipping industry is currently still experiencing the same problem, namely the factor of corrosion in the hull, which makes the hull of the ship should be given a coating in order to reduce the corrosion. For this reason, further research is needed on the properties of the materials that will be used as materials for the manufacture of ship hulls. ASTM A36 carbon steel material is known as one of the materials commonly used in ship hull materials. Therefore, researchers conducted a study using ASTM A36 material, to determine the corrosion rate value received by ASTM A36 material with artificial currents and seawater. Tests were carried out for 24 hours, 48 hours, 76 hours, 92 hours, 120 hours. The test results show that the ASTM A36 material at the time of testing was 24 hours, experiencing pitting corrosion, 48 hours, 76 hours, 92 hours, 120 hours experiencing erosion corrosion which erodes the surface of the ASTM A36 material. With the results of this test, it can be seen that ASTM A36 material that is not coated will experience rapid corrosion and aggressive erosion symptoms.
