This study aims to determine: (1) the difference in the result of learning skills in writing news text writing between low and high motivated students taught by contextual and conventional learning; and (2) the influence of learning approach and learning motivation on news text writing skills. The theory that became the reference in this research about the contextual opinion of Johnson and Komalasari, the theory of motivation of opinion Sardiman, and write the news text opinion Panggabean. This research is a quasi experiment with nonequivalent control group design. The population in this study is all students of class XII MAN 1 Pekanbaru, amounting to 331 students. Sampling was done by cluster sampling technique consisting of 30 students in each class XII MIA 1 as experiment class and class XII MIA 3 as control class. Based on the data analysis, the research results obtained at the level of 95% confidence, namely: (1) Improvement of students' text writing skills skills taught using contextual approach is significantly higher than students taught using conventional approach because t_count = 7,48> t_tabel = 2,021 ; because at the time of learning using the contextual approach the students seem to respond well learning process (2) improvement of the result of writing skill of news text of students who have low learning motivation taught using contextual approach higher significantly than students who have low learning motivation taught using conventional approach class XII MAN 1 Pekanbaru, because t_count = 6.99> t_table = 2.048; because with the contextual approach the students can understand the learning well (3) the improvement of the result of writing skill of news text of students who have high learning motivation taught using contextual approach significantly higher than students who have high learning motivation taught using conventional approach class XII MAN 1 Pekanbaru, because t_hitung = 2.36> t_table = 2.048; because the contextual learning of motivated students is more active in the learning process, because they are heavily involved in the learning process, and (4) there is an interaction between learning approach and student learning motivation in influencing the skills of writing news text of class XII MAN 1 Pekanbaru, because Fcount = 5,554 <Ftable = 4.02; because learning motivation can determine success in student writing skills. Thus the contextual approach can be used as a proper learning approach and able to improve the learning achievement of news text writing skills.
