Abstract

The use of plastic for human life is indeed inevitable. The amount of plastic waste of the Indonesian
population every day is about 23,600 tons. Another alternative to handle plastic waste is to convert it into
fuel oil. This study aims to examine efforts to overcome pollution by plastic waste by processing it into
alternative fuels and analyzing the efficiency of fuel use and the performance of the plastic fuel produced
compared to gasoline fuel on a motor that is commonly used by fishermen. This study uses an
experimental method to design the tools, testing the tools to obtain oil from waste plastic and then to try
out the fuel oil on a fishing boat engine. This research was conducted in May-June 2018 in the
workshop of SMK Negeri 3 Pariaman. The maximum fuel yield of 55.1% was produced in
experiments using PP plastic raw materials, with vacuum pressure (-30 psi) and 120 minutes.
The use of fuel from plastic waste is 21% more efficient compared to gasoline fuel. Alternative
use of plastic fuels is more efficient compared to the use of gasoline fuel seen from the test
results of paired sample t test, namely the value of tcount> ttable of 4,316 > 1,83311 which indicates
that there are significant differences in the amount of fuel use with different times.
