Abstract

Abstract
As an overseas area and part of Minangkabau the embodiment of the Padang
traditional house is very different in shape from the traditional Minangkabau house in the area
of origin (darek). The uniqueness of the Minangkabau traditional house is in the form of the
roof which is called "gonjong", whereas in the traditional Padang house it is called Kajang
Padati because the shape of the roof is like "Kajang Padati". Although there are similarities in
architectural elements to traditional coastal and Malay houses, overall it has its own
uniqueness.
The research of the "Kajang Padati" house is seen from the function, shape, space
pattern, ornaments and other elements. Of the eleven districts in Padang, it turns out that this
type of building still only exists in eight districts, physically still in good condition. The
methodology used in this study is exploratory with qualitative analysis, based on efforts to
build a complex and holistic picture, formed with words or descriptions, by reporting detailed
views of informants, carried out in a natural setting.
From the literature it is estimated that the appearance of buildings like this around the
17th century when Aceh controlled the Minangkabau coast. Ornaments and building elements
differ greatly from traditional buildings in Darek. Almost all of the buildings studied were not
built during the era of Aceh's control of Padang, but were built during the Dutch colonial era
(37 pcs) or 92.5%. Only 3 buildings were built during the physical revolution and the era of
independence. Although different from the darek building, the "Rumah Gadang Kajang
Padati" functions the same as the ethnic identity and the people who use it and shows that they
are part of the Minangkabau culture.
