the concepts of speech acts taken from Searle, (1969). Gunarwan (1994), and the
politeness principles stated by Brown and Levinson (1987), social factor, social class,
and dimension stated by Holmes (2001). From the data analysis, the results show that
there are five types of speech acts used by the Tengganai, namely the speech act of (1)
representatives, such as reporting, stating, and blessing, (2) directives which includes
requesting, s, and ; uggesting, questioning, (3) expressives that covers the speech act of
praising, thanking, greeting, criticizing, and; (4) commissives in terms promising, and
threatening; and (5) declarations in terms of deciding, and forgiving. The results also
show that the more widely types used by Tengganai were the speecha act of
representative in terms of blessing and the speech act of directive in accordance with
asking for the marriage proposal. Furthermore, the most widely strategy used by
Tengganai was off record with indirect strategy Such finding implies that the politeness
principles are still applied in the community in the context of the marriage proposal event
