PENINGKATAN KEMAMPUAN MEMBACA EKSPRESIF PUISI DAN AKTIVITAS SISWA DENGAN METODE LANGSUNG SISWA KELAS VIII 3 SMP NEGERI 31 PADANG

Abstract

The research has been done because of the low quality of students’ in understanding the
literary works especially in reading poems expressively. This paper describes the
improvement of expressive reading skills and students’ activities by the use of direct method.
Direct method refers to a method used by a teacher as a model in learning a subject. A
number of concepts used in analyzing the data were taken from Agustina (2008) in terms of
reading poems expressively, and Abimanyu (2008) in terms of direct method. Data of the
research were taken from the students at class VIII 3 SMPN 31 Padang that consist of 15
male and 15 female students. The research has been done in three cycles that consists of four
steps, namel (1) planning, (2) implementation, (3) observation, (4) reflexion. Data of this
research were the result of expressive reading poems, and non-test data obtained from
observation sheets, and the result of field notes. From the data analysis, the writer found: (1)
the application of direct method in expressive reading poems learning have positive impact
on students learning, this also can be seen from students behavior during the learning
process in reading poems expressively, (2) students activity increased from cycle I, cycle II
to cycle III, that is cycle I is 55, 6, cycle II increased became 66, 8 and cycle III increased
becaming 85, 7. As result, the use of direct method can improve the skills in reading poems
expressively, and the students activities were also increased, they are (a) the rhythm 86,1%,
(b) the volume 87,8%, (c) expression 87,8%, (d) kinesik 87,8%.
