Abstract

Style can be identified based on the circumstances in which the speaker is speaking, whether it's formal or informal, public or private, and by the people who listen to, when the situation of speaking, whether they are friends, parents, or strangers [1]. The writer used a qualitative descriptive method. And analyzing the data by identifying the formal and casual style movie based on Holmes’s theory, and the social factor of using formal and casual style in the pursuit of happyness movie. There are 24 data for formal and 39 data for the casual language style. This research also reveals that participant and setting are the dominant social factors that affected the use of formal and casual language style in this movie.
