Abstract

This abstract analyzed substitution which is one type of grammatical cohesion according to the theory of Halliday and Hasan (1976). Substitution is one of the types of grammatical cohesion which is analyzed as a conjunctive word in a sentence, which is divided into three types, namely: 1) Nominal Substitution, 2) Verbal Substitution, 3) Clausal Substitution. The purpose of this research is to identify the types and functions of substitution in the story. The method used in this study is the descriptive qualitative method. The results of the study were conducted there were 51 data containing substitution, the 51 data were divided into; 15 Nominal Substitutions, 14 Verbal Substitutions, and 22 Clausal Substitutions.
