AN ANALYSIS OF LANGUAGE STYLE FOUND IN “MALEFICENT: MISTRESS OF EVIL” MOVIE

Abstract

In this study, the writer analyzes types of language style found in “Maleficent: Mistress of Evil” movie based on Joos’ theory. The writer also explained about the social factor that determine each characters to speak in different style according to Holmes (2013). The goal of this research is to determine the type of language style and its social factor. The writer uses a qualitative method to identify this study. The result of this study showed there were 4 types of language style that appeared in this movie, those are formal style, consultative style, casual style, and intimate style. In addition, there were 50 utterances that appeared in the movie, 11 utterances for formal style, 8 utterances for consultative style, 20 utterances for casual style, and 11 utterances for intimate style. The casual style was the most used by characters in this movie. Meanwhile, frozen style is not present in the language style of the characters because they lack authority to utilized it and the social aspect did not influence them to use it.
