Abstract

The studying of this study is a about the flouting maxims in the conversation by the characters in Sherlock Holmes Movie. In this research have 2 objectives, to identify what the flouting maxims used by the characters in the movie and the second to find the reason why the characters frequently used the flouting maxims. This research is use the Cutting’s (2002) theory. This research use qualitative research method of 30 utterances that classified as flouting maxims. 3 Flouting maxim quantity that flouts in the movie, 8 flouting maxim of quality, 18 flouting maxim of relation and 1 flouting maxim of manner. Flouting maxim of relation are frequently get flouted by the characters in the movie. To answer the second objective which the analysis of reasons by connecting with the setting, that is with all conditions (place, topic of conversation, environtment, etc.) the setting is what causes the characters to act.
