Abstract

This study aims to analyze the effect of work stress on the negative behavior of employees with
transactional leadership and transformational leadership as a moderating variable in the City District
Environmental Service in West Sumatra. The sampling design used in this study was random sampling.
Of the 892 employees of the Environmental Office of the City District of West Sumatra, 276 people
were selected as samples. Data obtained from questionnaires were collected and analyzed using simple
linear regression testing and moderating regression analysis with the help of SPSS. 20.00.
The results showed that (1) work stress has a positive and significant effect on employee
negative behavior, (2) transactional leadership has a positive and significant effect on employee
negative behavior, (3) transformational leadership negative and significant influence on employee
negative behavior, (4) leadership transactional has a positive and significant effect in strengthening the
effect of work stress on employee negative behavior and (5) transformational leadership has a negative
and significant effect in weakening the effect of work stress on employee negative behavior.
A comprehensive policy is needed to reduce the occurrence of negative employee behavior by
controlling the level of work stress through stress management and the need for a leadership shift from
transactional to transformational paradigm that upholds the values of togetherness, mutual respect,
mutual trust and foster a high sense of responsibility so that it can suppress the occurrence of employee
negative behavior.
