THE EFFECT OF EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE, JOB STRESS, AND CYNICISM ON EMPLOYEE PERFORMANCE: THE ROLE OF MOTIVATION AS INTERVENING VARIABLE

Abstract

The purpose of the study was to examine the role of motivation as intervening variable on the
relationship between emotional intelligence, job stress, cynicism and employee performance. The
number of usable samples in this study was 58 employees who were currently working for
Community Empowerment Board Village Government Women's Empowerment and Family
Planning at Sungai Penuh City. In order to collect the data, this study used questionnaire while
technique of anlysis was performed hierarchical regression analysis. The results of study
displayed that emotional intelligence and cynicism were found to have significant effect on
employee performance, while job stress did not influence employee performance. Emotional
intelligence, job stress and cynicism were found to have significant effect on motivation, and
motivation also influenced significantly employee performance. Motivation was proven as
intervening variable on the relationship between emotional intelligence, cynicism and employee
performance.
